I wrote this literature review for my Determinants of Health Behavior class taught by Professor Sarah Hague. For this artifact I synthesized recent research and journals to compile a comprehensive essay on the known effects of cancer and cancer survivorship on mental health. This was my first time writing a literature review, and I gained a lot of skills necessary for public health research. I was also exposed to the concept of narrative medicine, which I feel should be the future of healthcare. I plan to apply this experience in my career at a nonprofit in future interactions with patients or beneficiaries that may be struggling with medical trauma.

I wrote this disease interview report for my Human Health and Disease class taught by Professor Sarah Hague. In this report I researched PCOS, interviewed a patient with PCOS, and drew conclusions about health equity and disparities, and how they affected her healthcare journey. Researching and writing this report has taught me key skills like summarizing research and collecting primary data. I also gained valuable experience in building and conducting interviews. I will go on to use the skills I have gained from this report in my career by staying conscious of the concept of health equity, and how it affects beneficiaries and patients I will come into contact with in the future.

I wrote this paper during my semester abroad in Argentina for my course The Hispanic World: Latin America taught by José Martínez. In this paper I discussed the oligarchic order that rose to power in Latin America in the late 1800s and lasted through the Great Depression. This artifact demonstrates my knowledge of Latin American history, Spanish reading comprehension, and Spanish writing skills. This class and this paper deepened my understanding of Latin American culture and behavior, and will assist me in continuing to practice cultural humility. I will use the insight I gained from this experience during my career when I work at a nonprofit organization that supports individuals of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

This paper was written for an intensive history program taught by José Martinez. This program took place during the first month of my semester abroad in Argentina. In order to learn more about the history of Argentina, we took a school trip to the mountains and took some history lessons about Argentina’s versions of cowboys, gauchos. In this artifact I discuss the political and cultural impact of gauchos during the eighteenth century, and how they became a well-known symbol of freedom and courage in Argentina. This paper demonstrates the development of my cultural competency, which I will use in my career to aid marginalized communities.

Linguistic Proficiency

I wrote this artifact as a final essay for my Intermediate Spanish Grammar and Composition class taught by Professor Melva Persico. The objective of this essay was to research a topic I was interested in and the way that Latin American culture has influenced this topic. This essay deepened my understanding of the ways Latin American culture is ingrained in our society, and made me realize how many trends and styles are developed by Latino stylists. I will go on to apply this knowledge to my nonprofit career to build culturally competent connections to best aid our Latino beneficiaries. This artifact demonstrates my awareness of the importance and impact of Latin American creatives.

I created this presentation for my Spanish and International Business class during my semester in Argentina taught by Professor Eleonora de la Torre. For our first presentation we selected a topic, and then described the difference between said topic in Argentina and America. In this presentation I analyzed the components and ratings from both countries’ healthcare systems, and compared them to observe the disparities in each country. Researching for this presentation improved my knowledge of organizational models and the structure of healthcare systems. I plan to use the information I learned in my future career at a health nonprofit to better grasp the healthcare experiences of our Latino beneficiaries.
